Types of Playgroups

All Playgroups are similar in that they are groups of young children, accompanied by a caring adult, enjoying the interaction and learning experiences that occur through play.

Playgroups are also all different because they are made up of families who bring with them a wide range of experiences, skills, interests and expectations. Playgroups may be a diverse mix of families or they may cater to a special interest group.

Diverse groups may include:

  • Baby groups and first time parents
  • Fathers’ groups
  • Groups where languages other than English are spoken
  • Groups for families from culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Montessori groups/Steiner groups
  • Grandparents groups
  • Groups for indigenous people
  • Groups for families with a particular need or special interest in common
  • Intergenerational groups
